Steve: That's because the 45 ran more than four minutes. You needed to be a big star to get KHJ to go that long, and this was Linda's second single in three years.
I know that was usually true, which is why it would surprise me whenever KHJ would play something longer. "MacArthur Park" comes to mind. KHJ would cut out the bridge verses ("There will be another song for me ...") but kept in the long instrumental portion as well as the first two verses and chorus and the closing chorus coming out of the instrumental. That had to be almost five minutes' worth of song. "Hey Jude," though, was always faded after the fourth "Na na na na-na-na-na." But it played the full "A Day in the Life," which is over five minutes.
Steve: It all came down to what the audience wanted to hear...they were demanding A Day In The Life, Hey Jude and MacArthur Park...they probably heard Linda first on KHJ (in edited form).

The single of "Long, Long Time" had three verses, but KHJ played a version with just the first two verses.
