KHJ Boss 30 - October 22, 1969

Issue #225 - This is the final issue of the second-generation surveys. It’s also effectively the end of “Boss Radio” being used as a slogan on the surveys.

A tale about infidelity hits No. 1 in the form of R.B. Greaves’ “Take a Letter Maria.”

"And When I Die" and "Wedding Bell Blues" both on the chart and both Laura Nyro penned tunes, but neither of them her versions. I believe in about three weeks "Eli's Coming" by Three Dog Night will join then on there making it three of her songs being on the survey at the same time. Pretty incredible. Her music seemed to really resonate at this time.

Yes, what Jim Webb was to 1967 and 1968, Laura Nyro was to 1969. Her original version still sound great.

The 45 of "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" was an edited version of the album cut, but KHJ played an even shorter version.

Robert W. Morgan on a 1968 aircheck says something like if Laura Nyro and Jim Webb ever got married and had a baby, that kid would write the best and last song ever written.

They were huge at the time...especially in L.A. and especially on KHJ.

And what's frightening is to remember that in 1968 Webb was 22 and Nyro 21. Imagine writing all of those amazing songs at such a tender age.

And by Thanksgiving, all three of Nyro's compositions were in the BILLBOARD Top 10...so I can imagine what Christmas that year was like at her house.

And for good measure, the 5th Dimension would chart Laura Nyro's "Blowing Away" on the last survey of 1969. They did well with her material, charting four of her songs on KHJ and five on Billboard.
