For years if anyone had asked me what the number one song was the week before "Light My Fire" (and it actually happened a couple of times), I would have instantly said it was the timely and somewhat controversial "Society's Child" by Janis Ian, which would have exposed where I grew up and my fixation on KHJ's surveys. I shouldn't have been so surprised when I found out much later that it didn't even make the top ten on the Billboard charts and was completely passed over for airplay in many parts of the country.
