Back in '72, Lyle hired me as a 'kid news assistant' who edited tapes, wrote news and basically 'babysat' the newsroom during the overnights on Saturday and Sunday nights.

The KHJ Boss jock on those overnights was Johnny Williams. Very nice guy.

On Sunday after midnight, the entire building basically shut down...both TV and Radio, my shift started at 8pm, so it was just me and the security people wandering the halls. I was there to make sure that if there was a real news emergency, I could call Lyle and someone could come in to start reporting on air. On those Sunday all nighters, I was the person who would write a 6am newscast so the morning newsperson wouldn't have to start with nothing at 4am. My shift ended at 4am and the station was on its own until people started arriving at 5am. Fortunately, nothing ever happened during that one hour.

All that for the princely wage of $5 per hour.

I found slightly better work at KFWB writing news there and remember quitting by walking into Lyle's very tiny broom closet office while he was sitting at his desk and holding my paycheck, telling him there was something wrong with it. He looked up, annoyed and said 'What?!!' thinking he was going to have to solve a problem not of his making. I replied that it was too small and I was giving my notice to move on to another station. He just shrugged, probably wonder why it took me so long for so little.
